Keeping Fido Fit

July 1, 2021

Is your canine pal super active? Or is Fido more of a couch potato? No matter which category your pooch falls into, it’s important to make sure he’s getting proper exercise. All dogs are different, so what works for one may not be appropriate for another. A local Tumwater, WA vet offers some advice on this below.

 Custom Workout

Your furry friend’s size and breed will have a lot to do with what sort of activity he needs. Small dogs, senior dogs, and brachycephalic dogs should not be encouraged to push themselves too hard, and may be fine with just a daily walk. If you have a more athletic pup, such as a Golden Retriever, your playful pet may need an hour or more of activity each day. Ask your vet for more information.

Experiment A Bit

Our canine companions all have their own personalities and preferences. One pooch may love playing Fetch , while another may prefer running or agility work. Swimming is also a great doggy workout.

Let Fido Do The Work

Is your four-legged friend more active than you are? Opt for activities that keep Fido running around while you stay relatively stable. Fetch is good for this: you can stay in one spot while your pup runs around. A mechanical ball launcher or laser pointer is also a good option for this.

Stance

Your furry buddy’s activity needs will change as he ages. Older dogs get tired more easily, and should not be encouraged to jump or stand on their back legs. This is also a concern with pups that are prone to hip dysplasia, such as German Shepherds. Check with your vet on this regularly.

Indoor Fun

You’ll also need to adjust things according to the weather. When it’s cold or rainy, Fido will be indoors more, and may get a bit restless. If you have stairs, you can give your pet an indoor workout, Rocky-Balboa style, by combining Fetch with stair runs.

Have Fun

All dogs need at least a daily walk. Don’t think of this as a chore. Enjoy it this time with your canine buddy. Take the time to experiment with photography, or catch up on some podcasts. You may really like discovering new places with your furry bff. Explore some new parks or trails with Fido!
